About this Service

I'm a full-service tailor offering gender and size-inclusive alterations, mending, and custom designs for clothes and textiles. I work out of a studio in Prospect Lefferts Gardens in Brooklyn, NY weekdays 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on a by-appointment basis.

Whether you're looking for a tailor to make your clothes fit better, someone to creatively mend your old, holey sweaters, or a trusted source to make you anything from a custom wedding dress to a set of pillow covers, Birdhouse Tailoring is a one-stop shop. You can book a fitting, see examples of my work, and read client testimonials at the site below.

About this Lister

Hi, I'm Eliza — a fiber artist, self-taught tailor, and the founder of Birdhouse Tailoring. I'm from upstate New York but have lived in New York City on-and-off since 2016. I know that for many queer people and folks excluded from generic, “one-size-fits-all” clothing sizing, getting clothes tailored can be an emotionally fraught, uncomfortable, or unsatisfying experience. That’s why, when I left my job in journalism in 2024 to pursue my love of sewing, I knew I wanted to create a space where everyone can feel safe and celebrated. Birdhouse Tailoring is open to everybody, but I’m particularly passionate about being a part of the process of helping queer people feel more connected to themselves, their bodies, and their identities via the clothes they wear.

Background and Expertise

I'm a mostly-self taught sewist who has been sewing since 2020. I started off sewing and altering my own clothes, before beginning to tailor my friends' clothes and slowly offering tailoring services to others in 2023.

I'm also a fiber artist and have been knitting, weaving, quilting, and embroidering for many years. In 2024, I was fortunate enough to receive a fellowship at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, where I studied hand stitching under the fabulous fiber artist Susie Brandt. I have also taken workshops on a variety of embroidery and mending techniques from around the world through Tatter, a Brooklyn-based textile school, under instructors including Sanae Ishida, Selina Ben, Maite Jimènez, and Blair Stocker.
