About this Service

Learn analog photography and darkroom printing at Bushwick Community Darkroom, Brooklyn’s community film lab and teaching darkroom.

We offer hands-on classes in black & white film developing, darkroom printing, color film developing, cyanotype, and experimental processes like Caffenol, Beerenol, and Winol.

Our developing and printing classes are small, hands-on workshops where each student works individually. You’ll learn how to load film, mix chemistry, develop negatives, and make real darkroom prints with step-by-step guidance from experienced instructors.

Our experimental workshops (Caffenol, Beerenol, Winol) explore alternative developers made from everyday ingredients like coffee, beer, or wine. These sessions are more demonstration-style and typically involve batch developing film together as a group, making them a fun introduction to creative darkroom chemistry.

Classes are designed for all experience levels — from complete beginners to experienced photographers looking to try alternative processes.

About this Lister

Bushwick Community Darkroom is a community film lab, teaching darkroom, and creative hub located in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Our mission is to keep analog photography accessible by providing affordable darkroom access, hands-on classes, and a welcoming space for photographers at every stage of their practice.

The darkroom was founded by photographer Lucia Rollow, who discovered darkrooms as a teenager and has been committed ever since to preserving and sharing traditional photographic processes. What began as a small grassroots darkroom has grown into a thriving community space where artists, students, and curious beginners can learn and experiment with analog photography.

In addition to Lucia, many of our workshops are taught by independent instructors with decades of experience in photography, darkroom printing, and alternative processes. Each teacher brings their own expertise and approach, creating a diverse range of classes and creative perspectives.

Whether you're developing your first roll of film or exploring experimental chemistry like Caffenol or cyanotype, the goal is the same: to make the magic of the darkroom approachable, collaborative, and fun.

Background and Expertise

Bushwick Community Darkroom has been supporting analog photographers in New York City for over a decade. The space offers professional darkroom facilities for black & white and color film developing, darkroom printing, scanning, and alternative photographic processes.

Founder Lucia Rollow studied photography at the School of Visual Arts and has spent years building community darkroom spaces that make traditional photographic techniques accessible to the public. Her work focuses not only on teaching technical skills but also on fostering a collaborative creative environment where photographers can learn from one another.

Our teaching team includes experienced photographers, printers, and artists with decades of darkroom experience, many of whom actively exhibit work and maintain professional photography practices.

Together we aim to preserve and pass on the craft of analog photography through hands-on education, experimentation, and community.
