Wisteria cottage is a unique and charming home in the hills above Lake Trasimeno, a perfect base from which to explore central Italy. Designed by the owner and built in the 1970s of local, hand-chiseled stone, the two-storey cottage sleeps five and features an open-plan ground floor with floor-to-ceiling windows which seamlessly integrate indoor and outdoor spaces.
On the first floor, two double rooms and one single look out onto the surrounding gardens and woods. On the ground floor, a spacious bathroom is set off from the open plan eat-in kitchen, living room, and a dining area under an 18-foot ceiling. Outside, in a shady patio, one can enjoy birdsong over morning coffee and an afternoon glass of wine.
Set in a tranquil glade surrounded by oaks and pines, the cottage directly accesses the network of hiking and mountain biking trails that span the hills of Umbria and Tuscany. Your shopping needs, including top-quality and organic local produce, will be met down the hill in the village of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, less than a ten minute drive away. In addition to shopping, Tuoro offers a range of places to eat, spanning rustic pizza to fine dining. In the other direction, a five-minute drive towards the crest of the hill, you can enjoy spectacular sunsets at a cafe/restaurant with a scenic panorama of the lake and the distant Apennines. Perugia and Cortona are within a half-hour drive, while Assisi, Siena, Orvieto, Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Gubbio, to name just a few essential destinations, are all around an hour away. Florence can be reached by either car or train for an easy day trip, as can Rome, with an early start.
The owners live in the house next door, and are happy to help with any questions you may have and any assistance you may need. We can also provide cooking lessons or guided tours for an extra fee.
Whether you are looking for a peaceful place to rest, to work away from home, to enjoy a relaxed, off-the-beaten-path Italian holiday, or to visit the tourist hotspots in central Italy, Wisteria Cottage is your perfect home base.
The owner moved to Tuoro from New York City in 1970 with her husband and two young children. As the years passed, we found ourselves hosting family and friends ever more frequently and so decided to build a guest house – Wisteria Cottage – in which to welcome them more comfortably. Our style was and is influenced by family homes in Seattle and Boston, as well as spare Scandinavian interior design and the folk art of the many places we have traveled through. As the family has grown, children and grandchildren have scattered across the globe, but we all share a deep connection to this beautiful spot, and are delighted to share it with a new generation of travelers.
