Initiative to Re-imagine New Futures

Our current Artist Feature is New York-based poet and curator, Anaïs Duplan.

“The Listings Project has been a very comforting presence in my life. It’s nice to feel connected to other artists, not just through the fact of making art, but also because artists are people, too, which means we need things like housing and spaces to work in. I’ve been subscribed to the Listings Project for a long time, and even when I’m not looking for housing, it’s nice to feel looped in. A while back, when the Center for Afrofuturist Studies put out a call for applications, we shared it on the Listings Project and in that way, we were able to strengthen the project’s connections with New York’s artist community even though we’re located in Iowa. Now that I live in New York, I see the value of sharing information amongst artists, not just within New York, but across different artist communities in the United States.” — Anaïs

Anaïs Duplan is the founder of the Center for Afrofuturist Studies (CAS), an artist residency program for artists of color in Iowa City. CAS is an initiative to re-imagine new futures for marginalized peoples by generating safe work spaces for artists of color. The program produces lectures, workshops, public forums, and exhibitions on the intersections of race, technology, and the diaspora and has been featured on Hyperallergic and The Creators Project. Since 2016, CAS has hosted ten artists-in-residence from around the country. Jade Ariana Fair, their eleventh artist-in-residence, is at CAS now until November 15th.

As a poet and curator, Anaïs has facilitated exhibitions across the United States and in Iceland. Their video and performance works have appeared, or are forthcoming, in a number of group exhibitions at Flux Factory, the 13th Baltic Triennial in Lithuania, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in LA. Anaïs is the author of a full-length poetry collection, Take This Stallion and a chapbook, Mount Carmel and the Blood of Parnassus. Their poems and essays have appeared in a number of publications such as Fence, Boston Review, and The Journal. Anaïs is currently a joint Public Programs Fellow at the Museum of Modern Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
