Where We Work: Art Studios in Boston, Upstate New York, and Miami

By Mayela Rodriguez
March 29, 2021

Dozens of artists find and share art studio spaces every week on Listings Project. These artists are the lifeblood of our communities, keeping us connected to and engaged with the things that matter most. In our Where We Work series, we showcase some of these art studios.

“I started setting up my space a few weeks before the pandemic started. I had an extra room in my apartment that I had been meaning to turn into a dedicated studio space. I started cleaning, repurposing things I no longer needed, and getting second-hand furniture and art supplies. I wanted to fill the space yet not make it feel cluttered. I adore the space I’ve created and I am feeling very blessed to have access to, especially during these unusual and challenging times. My cat Willy does pop in throughout the day to hang out with me, too.”

Philippe Halaburda is a mixed-media artist working out of his art studio in Newburgh, NY. You can also find him on Instagram.

“I am lucky to live and make art in the same building. My studio is downstairs and my apartment is on the second floor. I am not the kind of artist who works eight hours at a time or late into the night. I need to have real breaks. But I do work every day, which pushes me to create even if some days are not as prolific as others. I use my space as a free creative laboratory. I work by following a very intuitive path and everything is a question of good timing. How to provoke this magical moment of the creation?”  - Philippe Halaburda

A Multi-Media Art Studio in Miami

Elaine Defibaugh is a multi-media artist working out of her art studio in Miami. You can also find her on Instagram.

“My space is 400 square feet and  fills up quickly.  I’m always juggling work around as my work continues to evolve.  When I’m ready to concentrate on a particular medium then I tuck the past work away. Most of my inspiration comes from outside of the studio. I usually immerse myself in what inspires me and when I’m ready to create that’s when I go into the studio. I use my space to create work, show work and also work on proposals for residencies, exhibitions, grants and fellowships.” - Elaine Defibaugh
